An International Conference on Plants and Environmental Pollution (ICPEP-2) was jointly organised by International Society of Environmental Botanists and National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow, India during 26-30 November, 1996. The Conference was co-sponsored by Commonwealth Science Council, London; IUBS, Paris; Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India; Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi; U.P. Council of Science & Technology, Lucknow and the University of Lucknow.

This highly successful Conference, organised for the first time in this field in India, was attended by nearly 200 delegates from India, U.K., U.S.A., Canada, Germany, France, Japan, Sweden, Greece, Slovakia, Russia, Philippines, The Netherlands, Malaysia, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

On the conclusion of the five-day meet, a set of recommendations were drafted by a panel of experts which were discussed at a plenary session and forwarded to relevant national and international agencies for implementation. Full Proceedings of the Conference have been published and released by Kluwer Academic, The Netherlands in September 2000.

During the course of the deliberations of ICPEP-96 it was decided to organise such international conferences on a regular basis after every 3-5 years. This suggestion was accepted by the authorities of NBRI and ISEB.

Accordingly, it was decided to organise the Second International Conference on Plants and Environmental Pollution (ICPEP-2) during 15-19 November, 2001, at the National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow. The Conference will be jointly organised by ISEB and NBRI broadly following the pattern and frame work of the first conference (ICPEP-96).

The venue of the Conference will be the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), Lucknow, which is one of the most prestigious and internationally reputed multidisciplinary plant science research institutes of India, under the aegis of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Govt. of India. ISEB is also permanently based at NBRI.

Lucknow, a city of over 2.5 million people, is the capital of north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is located 500 km South-East of Delhi and is connected directly by air with New Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Patna, Varanasi and Sharjah (U.A.E.); and by rail/road with all major Indian cities. Besides being a historical city, it is a major research and educational centre with a big concentration of biological, biomedical, agricultural, horticultural, palaeobotanical, engineering, technological and management institutes which are existing in harmony with equally prestigious centres of art, culture, music, literature and education.
